France Religion

religious background; Church and state is a term that refers to the relations between churches and governments. The church-state relationship has been the subject of disagreements and conflicts throughout history. Today, the separation of church and state is a central principle of government in the United States and some other democracies. It seeks to protect religious freedom and to prevent discrimination or exclusion on the basis of religion.About three-fifths of the French people belong to the Roman Catholic Church. Only a minority, however, regularly participate in religious worship; practice is greatest among the middle classes. The northwest (Brittany-Vendée), the east (Lorraine, VosgesAlsaceJuraLyonnais, and the northern Alps), the north (Flanders), the Basque Country, and the region south of the Massif Central have a higher percentage of practicing Roman Catholics than the rest of the country. Recruitment of priests has become more difficult, even though the church, historically autonomous, is very progressive and ecumenical.
