In the 1700's and early 1800's, sugar cane became Cuba's number 1 leading crop. People who grew sugar canes raised their crops on large plantations. These plantations depended on lots of human labor. Growers brought thousands of Africans to Cuba to make them slaves. The government of Cuba is highly centralized. Provides many benefits for the people who live in Cuba, including free medical care and free education for many. However, political and economic freedom is limited.
